The issue with traditional drum kits
They’re bulky, difficult to lug around and slow to set up and tear down. Not having a dedicated space for my own kit meant that drums were stowed away more than they were setup to play.Other musicians can turn up with their gear, a guitar in a case plus an amp and a few pedals and they're ready to go. What if there was a way to get that level of convenience for the drums - a quick and instant drum kit. There are small kits - but if you have drums why not use them in a different way.The Solution
A minimalist drum rack that sets up to mirror the traditional aesthetic without the hassle — the working prototype proves the principle that there is such a thing as convenience for drummers.The hardware comprises a lightweight, foldable aluminum framework, designed to fold down into a small, nested configuration — the frmwk — ideal for storage and portability.
Setup takes 20 seconds. Add drums, and in 5 minutes the OriRack becomes a stripped-down 3-piece kit: one rack, one tom, a snare, and a bass drum. Add a cymbal, a crash/ride, and a closed hi-hat with a standard drum pedal, and you’re all set.OriRack enables both a 14" tom or 16" floor tom to be used as a bass drum, the 14" gives a lovely thud and the 16" brings the boom.The OriRack also holds a 10"–14" snare drum, and using standard clamps its possible to mount a tom, hi‑hat, and crash/ride. And yes, when finished playing, the rack (with the snare and bass holders) folds up and packs into a cajon‑sized bag for true grab‑and‑go portability.
